Client background
Sepsis is a life-threatening condition that occurs when infection causes the body’s vital organs to shut down. It’s a leading cause of death worldwide — and for those who survive, the long-term impacts can be life-changing.
Speed is critical when treating bloodstream infections like sepsis. The faster clinicians can identify what’s causing the infection, the sooner they can treat it — and the better the chance of recovery. But bloodstream infections can be hard to diagnose. Blood cultures can take up to 72 hours to deliver results. In the meantime, clinicians often have to rely on “best guess” antibiotics.
Australian biotech company Microbio is changing that.
Their rapid diagnostic test, InfectID™-BSI, can detect 26 sepsis-associated bacteria and yeast species directly from a small blood sample — and deliver results in just 3 hours.
That means faster answers, more targeted treatment, and better outcomes for patients.
The challenge
As a research-led organisation, Microbio had developed an exceptional product with huge potential. Their breakthrough technology was ready to move beyond the lab.
The next step was turning that innovation into a commercially viable offering — without losing the scientific rigour and purpose that drove it. To do that, Microbio needed to:
- Strengthen their IT and data capabilities
- Streamline how their product was delivered
- Build systems that could support growth, compliance and ongoing development.
And, most importantly, do it in a way that stayed true to who they are — practical, innovative, and driven by impact.
Our approach
We partnered with Microbio to support this shift from research to commercial operations, working closely with their team to make sure everything stayed aligned to their vision and goals.
We started by building a clear picture of where they were now — looking across people, processes, technology, and product delivery.
From there, we worked together to design where they wanted to be — and what would need to change to get there.
This included:
- Running future-state vision workshops
- Reviewing their software development lifecycle (SDLC)
- Assessing their technical code for scalability and maintainability
- Analysing their data capability and readiness
Using these insights, we developed:
- High-level technical designs to support future development
- A data strategy to guide how information is captured, managed and used
- An IT investment roadmap to help plan for growth, resourcing, and compliance.
All of this came together in a practical, actionable plan — designed to support scale without unnecessary complexity.
Outcomes and benefits
Microbio’s groundbreaking science is changing the way infections are diagnosed. Our role was to support them in bringing that innovation to market, faster and with confidence.
With InfectID™-BSI, Microbio is bringing breakthrough science out of the lab and into the hands of clinicians — giving them faster, more accurate answers when it matters most.
Our work helped Microbio lay the technology and data foundations needed to scale that innovation and get it ready for the real world.
Tangible outcomes included:
- High-level technical designs to guide future system development
- A data strategy tailored to Microbio’s needs
- An IT investment plan to support future growth and compliance.
Impact beyond technical deliverables:
- Leadership alignment around a clear vision for scaling
- Greater clarity on system gaps, risks and priorities
- Increased organisational confidence in bringing their product to market.
Ultimately, this work supported Microbio’s mission: helping clinicians act faster, treat more accurately, and reduce unnecessary antibiotic use. This means improving patient outcomes and easing pressure on healthcare systems too.
With sepsis claiming 11 million lives globally each year, InfectID™-BSI is exactly the kind of innovation the world needs.
