Client background

An armed robbery occured at a commercial premise. A scenes of crime officer attended shortly after the incident, documented the scene and recovered fingerprint evidence left behind during the offence. At that point, there was no known suspect.

In many jurisdictions, fingerprint evidence from offences like this is submitted and then waits – often days – while higher-priority cases move ahead. During that time, investigations can lose momentum and suspects remain unidentified.

How the Public Safety Platform was used

After completing the scene examination, the scenes of crime officer submitted the fingerprint evidence digitally through bdna forensics.

Forensics is a forensic case management system with integrated laboratory workflow (LIMS) functionality, used to manage forensic work from crime scene submission through to court-ready reporting. Once submitted, the evidence entered a controlled forensic workflow and became immediately visible to the fingerprint bureau.

A fingerprint examiner picked up the job while the scenes officer was still returning from the location. Using forensics, the examiner conducted a one-to-many fingerprint search using an AFIS.

The system supported the full process – examination, verification, technical review, and reporting – within the same case record, without phone calls, emails, or manual prioritisation.

Outcomes and benefits

A verified fingerprint identification was completed within 76 minutes, using a single, end-to-end forensic workflow.

Instead of waiting days for forensic results, investigators had a confirmed suspect while the incident was still operationally fresh. Early momentum was maintained, and investigative decisions could be made with confidence based on formally verified results.

The identification was delivered through standard forensic controls, ensuring speed without compromising governance, traceability, or court defensibility.
